Divya Gupta Kotawala: Transforming Grief into Purpose, Legacy into Impact

Divya Gupta Kotawala: Transforming Grief into Purpose, Legacy into Impact

In a world where success is often measured by titles, milestones and material achievements, Divya Gupta Kotawala represents a far more meaningful definition of leadership—one rooted in resilience, empathy, purpose and the courage to transform personal adversity into a force for social impact.

Born and brought up in Delhi, Divya is a multifaceted entrepreneur, author, speaker, community builder, mental health advocate and women’s empowerment champion. Her journey is remarkable not simply because of what she has achieved, but because of the deeply personal story that shaped the woman she is today.

A graduate of Modern School, Barakhamba Road, Divya pursued Honours in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, followed by a Diploma in Fashion Designing from the National Institute of Fashion Designing, Delhi. Her educational journey reflected a diverse range of interests—history, creativity, fashion and culture—which would eventually become part of the rich tapestry of her professional and personal identity.

From a 300-Year Legacy to Building Her Own Brand

After marriage, Divya became part of her family’s jewellery business, carrying forward a remarkable 300-year-old legacy. With an understanding of heritage, craftsmanship and entrepreneurship, she went on to establish her own brand, House of Kotawala.

Yet, the most defining chapter of her life was still to come.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought an unimaginable personal loss when Divya lost her father. At the age of 39, she found herself confronting grief that words could barely describe.

But from that profound pain emerged a new purpose.

When Grief Became a Mission

In an effort to celebrate the life of her father and preserve his memory, Divya wrote her first book, My Dad’s Daughter.

What began as a deeply personal tribute to the man she called her hero soon evolved into something much larger.

The book became a bridge between grief and healing for thousands of readers navigating their own experiences of loss. Divya discovered that sharing her vulnerability could give others the courage to acknowledge their own pain.

Her journey as an author transformed into a mission: to help people shift their focus from pain to purpose.

_ My Dad’s Daughter_ went on to become an Amazon bestseller, reaching the No. 7 bestseller position, and sold thousands of copies worldwide. The book found its way into book clubs, reading communities and literature festivals across India, establishing Divya not merely as an author, but as a voice for conversations around grief, resilience and emotional healing.

From Author to Speaker: Taking the Message Beyond the Page

Divya’s story soon travelled beyond the pages of her book.

She delivered her first TEDx talk, built around the theme “Together Towards Tomorrow,” where she spoke about human sustainability and the importance of building a more empathetic and emotionally resilient society.

Her ability to combine personal storytelling with a larger social message has made her a sought-after speaker across educational institutions, literary platforms and professional forums.

She has participated in prominent literary platforms, including the World Book Fair, appearing as a guest speaker, and has contributed to conversations on platforms associated with Sahitya Akademi and FICCI.

She has also spoken to students and young people at institutions including St. Xavier’s School, The Indian School, Tagore International School, Jaypee Greens School and College of Vocational Studies, among several others.

More recently, Divya was onboarded by the Hindustan Times education wing, HT PACE, to visit schools across Delhi-NCR, sharing her journey as an author and entrepreneur while encouraging young minds to embrace resilience, purpose and self-belief.

A Story That Found Its Way to Millions

Divya’s personal story has resonated strongly with audiences because it is deeply human.

Her journey has been featured by Humans of Bombay and highlighted across leading media platforms and publications including Hindustan Times, The Times of India, Outlook, Femina and Mid-Day, among others.

At the heart of these stories lies a simple yet powerful message: life may give us reasons to break, but we can choose to build something meaningful from what broke us.

Divya’s story demonstrates that healing does not necessarily mean forgetting. Sometimes, healing means carrying the memory of someone we love and allowing that memory to inspire a life of greater purpose.

Recognitions That Reflect a Larger Impact

Divya’s contribution across entrepreneurship, literature, social impact and public speaking has earned her numerous recognitions.

She has been recognised among the 40 Under 40 by Entrepreneur Today and featured on a Forbes list recognising inspiring leaders. She has also served as a jury member for Mrs. India Asia 2025, reflecting the credibility she has built across leadership and empowerment platforms.

Among her other recognitions are the Inspiring Leader Award by Advaita, Champion of the Year by Ladies Who Lead, and Women of the Year Award, alongside several other honours celebrating her contribution and influence.

She was also recently honoured by the Chief Minister and Governor of Haryana with a state honour recognising her extraordinary work and contribution to society—a distinction that adds another significant milestone to an already remarkable journey.

Building Conversations Around Grief and Mental Health

For Divya, mental health is not a passing conversation. It is a cause close to her heart.

Her own experience with loss showed her how important it is for people to have safe spaces where they can speak about grief, loneliness, emotional struggles and healing without judgement.

Taking this vision further, she launched an anthology titled Stories of Courage, bringing together 11 other co-authors who shared stories centred around grief, healing and emotional resilience.

The anthology represents a collective belief that difficult conversations can become powerful instruments of healing—and that no one should have to navigate emotional pain completely alone.

Divya strongly believes in creating supportive communities for people dealing with emotional challenges and in normalising conversations around mental well-being.

Empowering Women Through Action and Advocacy

Divya’s commitment to creating social impact extends to women’s empowerment.

She serves as the Campaign Director of Naari, a programme of the Ashhwika Foundation, where she works towards creating positive change and greater opportunities for women.

She is also the host of the podcast series Dear Dairy, through which she brings stories, conversations and perspectives into the public space.

For Divya, empowerment is not merely about giving advice. It is about creating environments where people feel seen, heard, valued and capable of creating change in their own lives.

#FromTheHeart: Creating a Community of Connection

Perhaps one of the most personal extensions of Divya’s philosophy is #FromTheHeart, a community she founded with the vision of bringing together people from different walks of life, professions and mindsets.

The community is designed as an access group where people can network, learn, grow and connect, while also finding a safe and positive space to simply share.

In an increasingly disconnected world, #FromTheHeart reflects Divya’s belief that meaningful human connection can itself become a source of strength.

It is an extension of everything she stands for—community, empathy, learning, emotional well-being and collective growth.

More Than an Entrepreneur. More Than an Author.

Divya Gupta Kotawala’s journey cannot be confined to a single professional identity.

She is an entrepreneur carrying forward a historic family legacy.

She is an author who transformed personal grief into a bestselling book.

She is a speaker who takes conversations about resilience and human sustainability to stages and classrooms.

She is a community builder creating spaces for connection.

She is an advocate for mental health conversations.

She is a champion of women’s empowerment.

And above all, she is a daughter carrying forward the memory of her father in the most meaningful way possible.

Her achievements are impressive, but the emotion behind them makes her story extraordinary.

A Daughter’s Promise

Behind every award, every stage, every book, every interview and every community initiative lies one deeply personal motivation.

To make her father proud.

When Divya lost her father, she could have allowed grief to become the final chapter of that relationship.

Instead, she chose to turn his memory into a living legacy.

She wrote.

She spoke.

She built.

She connected.

She inspired.

She created spaces for healing.

And she continues to use her journey to remind others that even the deepest pain can become the beginning of something beautiful.

At 39, a new Divya was born—not because the earlier Divya disappeared, but because adversity revealed a strength she may never have otherwise discovered.

Today, Divya Gupta Kotawala stands as a powerful example of purpose-driven leadership, showing that our greatest achievements are not always the ones that bring us recognition. Sometimes, they are the lives we touch quietly, the courage we awaken in others and the legacy we create for those we can no longer hold in our arms.

Her story is ultimately not just about success.

It is about love that became purpose, grief that became healing, pain that became impact, and a daughter’s determination to make her father proud—every single day.

And perhaps that is the most beautiful legacy of all.
